Search Engine Optimization (SEO)!
Search Engine Optimization Defined:
Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving a website's content and structure in order to attract the volume and quality of visitors to the site for selected keyword phrases, via the “natural” or "un-paid" search results.
Writing an actual guide for search engine optimization would be difficult and the length of a book... it would also be out of date as soon as it was published, and here’s why!
To give you an example, the algorithm that the Google search engine uses, establishes the baseline to which the web pages are compared and ranked for their database.
The Google algorithm alone has more than 200 ranking factors that are used to establish this baseline, and are proprietary in nature. The Google Engineers also make about half-a-dozen changes to that algorithm each week to reflect changes in the way people actually perform searches.
The whole process for optimizing your site for proper SEO will include extensive keyword research to determine which words or keyword phrases your target audience associates with the information, product or service you are offering,
You will need to find answers to these questions:
- What keyword phrases or wording are people using to search for your product or service?
- Study your competition… which of your competitors sites are higher in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP’s), and why?
- After an in-depth study of your competitor’s sites… which keyword phrases do you feel you can be successful with?
If you are a newly established web site with little authority in the eyes of the search engine, you will need to focus your efforts on long-tail keyword search terms.
Once you have discovered which keyword phrases you can use to potentially rank higher in the SERP’s over your competitors, you are ready to create a search engine optimization plan.
If you have an existing website or blog, review it to see if you have content that correlates closely with the keyword phrases that you have chosen.
At the minimum, you will need to have at least one page of well-written content for each of the keyword phrases you have chosen. Each page should be unique and focused on only one keyword phrase family.
The more competitive the keyword phrase is, the more difficult it will be to find yourself highly ranked among the Search Engine Results pages. Climbing the SERP's ladder for the more competitive keyword phrases will require a noble effort of additional pages with well written, unique content.
Additional efforts to rank well among the SERP's will also include the continual promotion of your website to include creating inbound links to your site from other highly ranked websites, blogs and directories..
